From August 19th, an event to exhibit and sell wooden crafts from Kanagawa Prefecture is being held at Shanghai Tsutaya Bookstore.
Sansuido's Kamakura carving products are also introduced as traditional crafts representing Kanagawa!
This time, we have focused on products with cherry blossom designs, as cherry blossoms are the flower that Chinese people associate with Japan.
I'd like to briefly touch on the relationship between Kamakura carving and China. It is said that the roots of Kamakura carving lie in imitations of the expensive lacquerware called Tsuishu, which was brought to China during the Song Dynasty during the Kamakura period along with Zen culture.
When interacting with foreign tourists who come to Sansui-do's storefront, I feel that Chinese customers often realize at a glance that Kamakura-bori is lacquerware. Unlike customers from Europe and the United States, this gives the impression that lacquerware is deeply rooted in their cultural background.
At Shanghai Tsutaya Bookstore, a lovely building that retains vestiges of the Shanghai Concession.
The exhibition will run until September 23rd, but the products on display are also available for online purchase on the Chinese social networking site, Xiaohongshu.
